It entails the exploration and understanding of different dream states, sleep disorders, psychedelic experiences, and conscious/subconscious experiences. The study does express some personal views, but keeps distant the pseudoscience that has given past dream studies such a bad name. Our study looks for the truth into sleep and the reasons we dream.dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.comBlogger687125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-85178194340622314482011-01-28T08:48:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:15.817-08:00@ryanhurd make sure to tell us...@ryanhurd make sure to tell us how it goes! :)dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-16532900203045504582011-01-28T08:43:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:00.490-08:00Auto Draftdream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-80204082121023264562011-01-28T08:28:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:15.766-08:00Cool Movie and Bad TeacherWell I spent a few dollars and ended up watching this pretty interesting documentary about a guy named Jonas Elrod who an see spirits, energy, and a few other things. What makes this interesting is that he didn't practice meditation or have any history of drug use, and has nothing wrong with is brain as far as science can tell. It was a pretty inspirational video because its about him trying to find answers. He does some pretty nutty things on his journey and also meets some pretty amazing people, but in the end finds what he is looking for. I highly recommend his movie located here.

Now about a bad teacher. So I have been taking college classes and normally don't rant on this site but it just sickens me what is going on at my college. I have a physics teacher who is Russian and is maybe the worst teacher that I have ever met. Shes not rude, dumb, or unable to teach, she just cant explain anything to anyone and expects too much from her impossibly uneducated students who cant learn due to her being so horrible. So I go to the physics department and meet with the chairman of the department. He explains to me that shes the only teacher they have and that I should maybe take a semester off in order to get a different teacher during the summer semesters. This idea wouldn't be completely bazaar besides the fact that I personally don't have any more time, and the other fact (putting my own personal wants and needs aside) this college is supposedly one of the best engineering schools in the state. Now whats still wrong with this? Everyone who wants to be an engineer is required to take this physics class. I care less about doing well in the class because I am not going in that direction for my degree, but for reasons I don't want to get into, still have to take the class and pass. I honestly cant believe that a college of this status only has one physics teacher for a class that is required such as this, and we are advised to learn on our own because the chairman understands the teacher is horrible... More than half the kids in my class were asleep today and as I was fighting off my normal head nods, I looked around and just laughed to myself.

Well in my end of rant, the myzeo work is still going great. I should be done in 4 days! I am excited because 5-htp is just bothersome trying to take it with no real results. I know I keep badmouthing the supplement but after the initial "belief the supplement is working" and reality coming into check, nothing is really happening. I would like to move onto stuff that people report having major effects on dreams and sleep. I also want to start some tests on Niacin (flush based) and see how it works and then move on to the non flush stuff. It would be exciting to see the differences between the two if there is any. I have heard both ways and am not sure what is correct. I also meet with another professor next week to look at the data and give me some direction, as in making sure the data is worth something statistically. It looks like it is but that doesn't mean its the best it can be.

Until next week and my myzeo test one is done, have fun dreaming!dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-80392389970046271162011-01-25T11:37:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:15.545-08:005-HTP StudyI am still working away every night on the 5-HTP study. I have about 6 more nights before I am satisfied with the results and can move on to other interesting supplements. Even though I don't want to show the results just yet, I can honestly say that 5-HTP shows little to no effect on sleep, even when its most active in the system. Everyone may be different and that's why we also have two other individuals doing the study. Once their information is collected and all the data analyzed we will most likely release the information.

I am also going to change my study page because its not really showing much with all the information I have posted on there. You can see my nightly sleep record and it shows I am a crappy person as I am unable to good nights rest, pretty much due to my current situation (college and all) but that's about it. I'll change it up later so that the information that we get from the studies can be viewed there.

Man sorry about that spelling before. I need more sleep :-(dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-17687666236691800152011-01-23T04:53:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:15.330-08:00Evolver IntensivesR and I have recently signed up for the Evolver intensive workshop online and it starts today. I have heard quite a few podcast in my time and though they only have two podcast so far, it seems like a promising show. I think everyone should check it out when they get a chance.

Here is a little about them:

Ubermensch is primarily a podcast created by a group of individuals where the focus of the show is the interviewees and not the interviewer. Personal information, personal advertisement, or egocentric intervention is minimized on the show so to spend more time on the important subjects. Each interviewer brings their own special understanding and ability to the interviews they conduct. Ubermensch is essentially a collective of all who contribute to the show.

check out their site at www.iamubermensch.com dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-4363217261183773652011-01-18T08:55:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:15.015-08:00Crazy DreamsI have been trying to get back into the swing of school and such and have started to get back into the flow of things. It normally takes a few days to do that. Over all I should be able to start back up my myzeo studies tonight.

I have been trying a new diet to lose some weight before the end of school. I have been reading about cutting most sugars out of your system by consuming as little carbohydrates as possible and as well refined sugars. You replace the sugars with oils (such as fish) and fats from meats. I know many of you may be vegetarian and not agree with killing pigs and cows, but its what our ancestors ate and I figured I would try it out. So far I feel great and its been a bit over a week now and though I have some cravings for sugars and breads, I still haven't had too many problems.

One thing that I have noticed however is how much my dreams have changed. They have become a lot more crazy in the sense of complexity and of very smart like dream characters. I dreamed last night of a strange complex linking between events and people, where if you become involved by accident, then strange events would start to occur to you. It was almost like bad luck, but very intentional much like shaman practice believes. Over all the dream is not really that important in my opinion but the reason for the dream is. I believe its because my brain isn't constantly "high" on sugar and is able to maybe think a little bit more clearly.

Anyways as I continue the diet I will have to see where the dreams take me and if any incite is found in them over time.dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-8634521763992194522011-01-09T13:08:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:14.781-08:00Neuroscience of Lucid DreamingRyan Hurd over at dreamstudies.org has posted another great update about the current research being done on lucid dreaming along with a look into the neuroscience involved. Here is some of what he has to say:

Lucid dreaming research is growing up. At least, that is Allan Hobson’s take on the recent burst of scientific studies published on conscious dreaming. Once a myth of Carlos Castaneda, and then a topic guaranteed to instantly transport researchers to the margins of academia, lucid dreaming has become a hot topic for neuroscience and cognitive psychology because it promises to isolate one of the hardest-to-pin-down objects of all time: consciousness itself.

You can read more heredream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-62207548345703912952011-01-03T11:16:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:14.470-08:00HolidaysI wanted to wish everyone a late happy holidays and since the holidays are almost over. Also I have been very busy with family and haven't really had any time to post anything. I have reading a great book over the last week for relaxing and finished "Singing to the plants" last week. I also received another myzeo data file and posted it on the site. I will be continuing my myzeo data gathering when I get back net week as well as working on some other projects.dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-26641664285607047832010-12-17T11:44:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:14.288-08:00Myzeo vs EmotiveAfter spending a few months with the Myzeo I thought it was about time to try out the Emotive that I received in the mail a few weeks ago. I must say that after trying the hardware out that I am very glad that I decided to get the Myzeo for the sleep studies.

The emotive is a great addition to the wireless and mobile EEG community. I would say that the EEG community is very small and is a hard group to compete with. Its costly to research the systems needed to operate the hardware, and its also hard to make it wearable by someone who would like to use these portable EEG systems while asleep or doing activities.

Emotive Positives

Emotive has its ability to read 14 sensors located at different areas of the wearers head. The system looks stylish so that you could wear it while doing activities outside and someone may laugh but then again wonder what in the world you are wearing such a cool looking device. The software for the system links up well with the hardware and gives the user an almost instantaneous readout of what the sensors are telling the system. You can easily see eye movement recorded by the brainwaves required to move the eyes as well as other readings that are produced from many different activities. The system also has an aim for gaming and comes with software to make it so you can play games with key emotions.

Emotive Negatives

Emotive is hard to use. The sensors fall out and you have to reapply them and pretty much start from scratch, removing the whole hardware from your head unless you have someone to help you. If you moved around to much there is a good chance the sensors will fall out and be lost for ever. Its also hard to get the sensors to read 100% in every sensor and takes about 10 min to place correctly. If this was used for a sleep study it would possibly not work because any movement causes havoc on the readouts and can cause sensors to moved off of their target location.

In conclusion the Emotive fails for what I needed to do with it and again I am so glad that I purchased the Myzeo. The Myzeo is a much better option in recording sleep and possibly with future software developmental, a better lucid dreaming aid.dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-79116185609690826402010-12-16T11:33:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:13.923-08:00The psychedelic secrets of Santa ClausI wanted to re-post this article as it has some really great information but the site contains some advertisements that may be overwhelming to some people. These mushrooms are now commonly seen in books of fairy tales, and are usually associated with magic and fairies. This is because they contain potent hallucinogenic compounds, and were used by ancient peoples for insight and transcendental experiences.

Most of the major elements of the modern Christmas celebration, such as Santa Claus, Christmas trees, magical reindeer and the giving of gifts, are originally based upon the traditions surrounding the harvest and consumption of these most sacred mushrooms.

The world tree

These ancient peoples, including the Lapps of modern-day Finland, and the Koyak tribes of the central Russian steppes, believed in the idea of a World Tree. The World Tree was seen as a kind of cosmic axis, onto which the planes of the universe are fixed. The roots of the World Tree stretch down into the underworld, its trunk is the "middle earth" of everyday existence, and its branches reach upwards into the heavenly realm.

The amanita muscaria mushrooms grow only under certain types of trees, mostly firs and evergreens. The mushroom caps are the fruit of the larger mycelium beneath the soil which exists in a symbiotic relationship with the roots of the tree. To ancient people, these mushrooms were literally "the fruit of the tree."

The North Star was also considered sacred, since all other stars in the sky revolved around its fixed point. They associated this "Pole Star" with the World Tree and the central axis of the universe. The top of the World Tree touched the North Star, and the spirit of the shaman would climb the metaphorical tree, thereby passing into the realm of the gods. This is the true meaning of the star on top of the modern Christmas tree, and also the reason that the super-shaman Santa makes his home at the North Pole.

Ancient peoples were amazed at how these magical mushrooms sprang from the earth without any visible seed. They considered this "virgin birth" to have been the result of the morning dew, which was seen as the semen of the deity. The silver tinsel we drape onto our modern Christmas tree represents this divine fluid.

Reindeer games

The active ingredients of the amanita mushrooms are not metabolized by the body, and so they remain active in the urine. In fact, it is safer to drink the urine of one who has consumed the mushrooms than to eat the mushrooms directly, as many of the toxic compounds are processed and eliminated on the first pass through the body.

It was common practice among ancient people to recycle the potent effects of the mushroom by drinking each other's urine. The amanita's ingredients can remain potent even after six passes through the human body. Some scholars argue that this is the origin of the phrase "to get pissed," as this urine-drinking activity preceded alcohol by thousands of years.

Reindeer were the sacred animals of these semi-nomadic people, as the reindeer provided food, shelter, clothing and other necessities. Reindeer are also fond of eating the amanita mushrooms; they will seek them out, then prance about while under their influence. Often the urine of tripped-out reindeer would be consumed for its psychedelic effects.

This effect goes the other way too, as reindeer also enjoy the urine of a human, especially one who has consumed the mushrooms. In fact, reindeer will seek out human urine to drink, and some tribesmen carry sealskin containers of their own collected piss, which they use to attract stray reindeer back into the herd.

The effects of the amanita mushroom usually include sensations of size distortion and flying. The feeling of flying could account for the legends of flying reindeer, and legends of shamanic journeys included stories of winged reindeer, transporting their riders up to the highest branches of the World Tree.

Santa Claus, super shaman

Although the modern image of Santa Claus was created at least in part by the advertising department of Coca-Cola, in truth his appearance, clothing, mannerisms and companions all mark him as the reincarnation of these ancient mushroom-gathering shamans.

One of the side effects of eating amanita mushrooms is that the skin and facial features take on a flushed, ruddy glow. This is why Santa is always shown with glowing red cheeks and nose. Even Santa's jolly "Ho, ho, ho!" is the euphoric laugh of one who has indulged in the magic fungus.

Santa also dresses like a mushroom gatherer. When it was time to go out and harvest the magical mushrooms, the ancient shamans would dress much like Santa, wearing red and white fur-trimmed coats and long black boots.

These peoples lived in dwellings made of birch and reindeer hide, called "yurts." Somewhat similar to a teepee, the yurt's central smokehole is often also used as an entrance. After gathering the mushrooms from under the sacred trees where they appeared, the shamans would fill their sacks and return home. Climbing down the chimney-entrances, they would share out the mushroom's gifts with those within.

The amanita mushroom needs to be dried before being consumed; the drying process reduces the mushroom's toxicity while increasing its potency. The shaman would guide the group in stringing the mushrooms and hanging them around the hearth-fire to dry. This tradition is echoed in the modern stringing of popcorn and other items.

The psychedelic journeys taken under the influence of the amanita were also symbolized by a stick reaching up through the smokehole in the top of the yurt. The smokehole was the portal where the spirit of the shaman exited the physical plane.

Santa's famous magical journey, where his sleigh takes him around the whole planet in a single night, is developed from the "heavenly chariot," used by the gods from whom Santa and other shamanic figures are descended. The chariot of Odin, Thor and even the Egyptian god Osiris is now known as the Big Dipper, which circles around the North Star in a 24-hour period.

In different versions of the ancient story, the chariot was pulled by reindeer or horses. As the animals grow exhausted, their mingled spit and blood falls to the ground, forming the amanita mushrooms.

St Nicholas and Old Nick

Saint Nicholas is a legendary figure who supposedly lived during the fourth Century. His cult spread quickly and Nicholas became the patron saint of many varied groups, including judges, pawnbrokers, criminals, merchants, sailors, bakers, travelers, the poor, and children.

Most religious historians agree that St Nicholas did not actually exist as a real person, and was instead a Christianized version of earlier Pagan gods. Nicholas' legends were mainly created out of stories about the Teutonic god called Hold Nickar, known as Poseidon to the Greeks. This powerful sea god was known to gallop through the sky during the winter solstice, granting boons to his worshippers below.

When the Catholic Church created the character of St Nicholas, they took his name from "Nickar" and gave him Poseidon's title of "the Sailor." There are thousands of churches named in St Nicholas' honor, most of which were converted from temples to Poseidon and Hold Nickar. (As the ancient pagan deities were demonized by the Christian church, Hold Nickar's name also became associated with Satan, known as "Old Nick!")

Local traditions were incorporated into the new Christian holidays to make them more acceptable to the new converts. To these early Christians, Saint Nicholas became a sort of "super-shaman" who was overlaid upon their own shamanic cultural practices. Many images of Saint Nicholas from these early times show him wearing red and white, or standing in front of a red background with white spots, the design of the amanita mushroom.

St Nicholas also adopted some of the qualities of the legendary "Grandmother Befana" from Italy, who filled children's stockings with gifts. Her shrine at Bari, Italy, became a shrine to St Nicholas.

Modern world, ancient traditions

Some psychologists have discussed the "cognitive dissonance" which occurs when children are encouraged to believe in the literal existence of Santa Claus, only to have their parents' lie revealed when they are older. By so deceiving our children we rob them of a richer heritage, for the actual origin of these ancient rituals is rooted deep in our history and our collective unconscious. By better understanding the truths within these popular celebrations, we can better understand the modern world, and our place in it.

Many people in the modern world have rejected Christmas as being too commercial, claiming that this ritual of giving is actually a celebration of materialism and greed. Yet the true spirit of this winter festival lies not in the exchange of plastic toys, but in celebrating a gift from the earth: the fruiting top of a magical mushroom, and the revelatory experiences it can provide.

Instead of perpetuating outdated and confusing holiday myths, it might be more fulfilling to return to the original source of these seasonal celebrations. How about getting back to basics and enjoying some magical mushrooms with your loved ones this solstice? What better gift can a family share than a little piece of love and enlightenment?

FURTHER LINKS AND REFERENCES:

- The Hidden Meanings of Christmas, Mushroms and Mankind, by James Arthur
- Who put the Fly Agaric into Christmas?, Seventh International Mycological Congress, December 1999, Fungus of the Month
- The Real Story of Santa, The Spore Print, Los Angeles Mycological Society, December 1998
- Santa and those Reindeer: The Hallucinogenic Connection, The Physics of Christmas, by Roger Highfield
- Fungi, Fairy Rings and Father Christmas, North West Fungus Group, 1998 Presidential Address, by Dr Sean Edwards
- Fly Agaric, Tom Volk's Fungus of the Month for December 1999
- Father Christmas Flies on Toadstools, New Scientist, December 1986
- Psycho-mycological studies of amanita: From ancient sacrament to modern phobia, by Jonathan Ott, Journal of Psychedelic Drugs; 1976
- Santa is a Wildman, LA Times, Jeffrey Vallance

BOOKS WORTH READING:

- Mushrooms and Mankind, by James Arthur
- Soma: Divine Mushroom of Immortality, by Gordon Wasson
- Mushrooms, Poisons and Panaceas, by Denis R. shamans.

Although most people see Christmas as a Christian holiday, most of the symbols and icons we associate with Christmas celebrations are actually derived from the shamanistic traditions of the tribal peoples of pre-Christian Northern Europe.

The sacred mushroom of these people was the red and white amanita muscaria mushroom, also known as "fly agaric." These mushrooms are now commonly seen in books of fairy tales, and are usually associated with magic and fairies.

He had a nice note about how he thinks that the shamans found the plants. I have often wondered this myself and I think that his explanation is very intriguing and makes sense. This is what he has to say:

"How in the world did indigenous peoples in the Upper Amazon come up with the idea of combining DMT with an MAO inhibitor? Many mestizo shamans will claim, of course, that the plants themselves taught humans how to do this. Other commentators point to some mysterious ecological wisdom found only in indigenous peoples. I think the answer is simpler. I think people were looking for a better way to vomit."

Now if I only read this passage for the first time then I may ask myself, what is Beyer's talking about? Well shamans often don't use plants for only the hallucinogenic effects, and most the time that ayahuasca is being used its not for seeing pretty objects or traveling to worlds (something that mestizo shamans don't do in the first place) but for the purge effects. Often ayahuasca is called the purge and for good reason. Purging has some great cleansing properties on the body and the end result is often less toxic substances or sickness. The shamans often relate this to cleaning the bad spirits out of the body as well.

Beyer continues:

"In the companion plants have many emetic properties of their own, it is plausible to hypothesize that ayahuasca vine and its companion plants were first combined in order to energizer or modulate their emetic and purgative effects, with the serendipitous result of creating and effective delivery form for DMT."
dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-2919021985287796152010-12-13T11:15:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:13.814-08:00Shamanism in the upper amazonI have been reading a book about Mestizo shamanism called "Singing to the plants" by Stephan V. Beyer, and really have enjoyed learning about the culture and the way of life of shamans. There are many things about shamans that I didn't understand and a lot that I didn't know until I started to read the book. The book has such a wealth of knowledge that its hard to fully take in everything that the author wants to convey in his accounts and research into shamanism. I wanted to briefly go through the book as far as I have read and talk about what I have learned from the book.

Two healers of the upper amazon

The book starts off talking about two shamans that are healers in the amazon forest. Their names are Don Roberto and Dona Maria. Both these shamans have spent most of their lives living in the rain forest building a relationship with the plants they heal with, and using those plants to heal many physical and psychological pains that local and visiting foreigners have. They also use their songs or icaros to call the spirits of every living thing to help someone in trouble. Life is hard for the two shamans as they often have to work other jobs in order to provide for their family and themselves. The shamans also live in a fear driven world by which sorcerers often poison and give a bad name to the shamans. Not only is the profession of these two shamans what brings them together but also their use of ayahuasca in their healing rituals.

The shamanic performance

Not only is the ritual of the shaman and the use of the healing plants whats important to the process of making someone better, also is the performance. The book talks about the extensive tricks that many shamans perform in order to show their patients what they are removing from them. Many shamans have gone out and talked about the false magical performances they have conducted, such as removing some meat from a persons body without cutting into them in order to remove a tumor. They say that the reason that they do these magical acts is because often enough people don't want to pay or believe that anything is happening when their is nothing physical to show them. The shamans also noticed that people who see these performances often heal better which we understand as the placebo effect. Performances include many things that shamans also consider very important to the protection of the individuals and shamans involved in the healing process. Shamans will sing, blow tobacco smoke, dance, and sometimes act as though being possessed by sprites.

Learning the plants

Learning the plants is a huge part of what the shamans do all through their life. It is possibly the most important item in the shamans tool set when conducting healing. They go on extraneous diets for months only eating small fish and cooked plantains, but that is only part of what they call the diet. They use psychoactive substances like ayahuasca to learn about other plants that are not psychoactive because ayahuasca produces visions and allows for communication not only with the ayahuasca spirit but also other plant spirits. This area of the book really gives a detailed look into why when shamans are asked how they found out how to make such an rare drink mixture of ayahuasca, the shamans always answer back, "the plants told us." The relationship that the shamans have with ayahuasca is very intimate and also is their relationship with all other types of plants as they often spend much of their time talking with the sprites of the plants.

Sounds

Songs that the shaman sings are often the tool used in order to call a spirit from where it resides. The songs that the shaman uses are taught to the shaman during their diet by the plants and often by other shamans during an apprenticeship. Shamans may also travel many miles on foot to learn icaros from other shamans in order to use them as protection or for healing. One of the main differences between Amazon shamans and other shamans is their ability to call the spirits with their songs, rather than travel to the spirit world. Each shaman produces their own icaro or songs to call the spirits to heal, and even those who learns icaros from other shamans, put their own twists into the song.

You can listen to one of Don Roberto icaros here

Phlegm and Darts

Something that I have always wondered about since watching the documentary "Jungle Trip" what did the shaman put into Piers mouth near the end of the show? Phlegm is also a great tool that the shamans have. Their phlegm is the substance inside of them (much like normal phlegm) that is protective agents evil darts. The phlegm of a shaman is in a way a spiritual substance that can be transferred to others for protection and festered in another body to create more phlegm to later transfer. The shaman often blows a mist of the phlegm on those being healed, and even singing or opening the mouth can cause phlegm to be used. When the shaman is healing others they often put the phlegm in their throats in order to stop darts and evil spirits from going into their body. They later spit out the bad phlegm in order to toss away the evil.

Darts are like evil spirits that can be used to harm others and also protect others. They may gain darts from other individuals or save darts from sick people in order to use as later protection or to use them for harm. If a shaman uses darts for harm, they are a sorcerer and are forever doing evil. Sorcerers are those who do harm or become obsessed with the power of the spirits and are "tricked" by the spirits to cause bad things to happen to another person. Its hard to say if darts are bad or good, I would believe its how you use them, but they still have great capacity of causing harm.

Initiation

Initiation for the shaman is very intense. As an apprentice after obtaining the phlegm from another shaman the individual must maintain a diet. The diet unlike our western starvation or restriction of food is nothing compared to what they call the diet. The apprentice must not leave his or her bed for a week while staying in the dark all while covering their mouths in order to protect the phlegm from leaving them. They drink tobacco juice for months while eating nothing but small fish with no teeth, along with cooked plantains. The apprentice is also not allowed to have sex or speak or be around anyone. They must keep their distance from all people and can only look at them from a distance. After a period of time these restrictions are slowly changed over a period of months and one at a time. Learning the diet as well as learning the self control makes a shaman resilient to temptation from the sprites to abuse the power given to them as well as allowing for communication from the spirits to the man or woman.

What are the shamans healing?

From what I have read of the book so far and of my other readings into the shamanism world, it seems that shamans are really true healers. I am not one to say that shamans are physically taking out disease of our bodies but what I do believe is they are healing our minds. Our mind has the great capacity of causing long term harm to our bodies as well as healing the body. It is also true that many of our medicines today are taken from the exact same people we currently call crazy or mystical ... shamans. We have taken the plants that they have used for thousands of years, purified them and sell them as pharmaceuticals today. I think the shamans deserve a little more respect then we often give them. If we don't respect them in the western world, they are still highly respected in the Amazon and greatly feared as well...dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-64841676259462404862010-12-10T12:27:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:13.714-08:00The Use of Salvia Divinorum to Facilitate Lucid Dreaming
An Experience:

The previsionary state begins to take hold. As usual, I find myself in what appears to be a dark room, illuminated only by what I would best describe as a subtle black light effect. I do my best to relax and let my subconscious drive the ensuing lesson and experience. My visual perspective begins to rotate counter clockwise in a wide arc. When this rotational effect ends, a more developed scene manifests. I am in a room with three walls. The walls, floor and ceiling have only a rough outline to them and are glowing a cool bright white. There seems to be a profound sense of energy and well being associated with this coloration. It's a safe place and highly personal. I have a strong visual sense but no perception of physical form. I suppose one would say I am disembodied? What would normally be the rooms fourth wall is missing. In its place is a hole into outer space. Nothing more than blackness and stars as far as one can see. This scene remains stable for the next several minutes as my visual perspective then slowly shifts clockwise. The scene begins to dissolve. I remain in this heightened state of awareness for several more minutes before fully breaking from the scene and re-engaging consensual reality.

Introduction:

This was a recent experience I had with the magical herb Salvia Divinorum. Yes, you can read descriptions like this all day long on erowid if you have the time and motivation. But that is not the purpose of this article. Fundamentally, this is a site focused on dreaming and dream lucidity and I will not stray far. In fact, I will try to link the topics of Salvia and lucidity in a manner that I have not seen discussed by others. But first some necessary background.

I have used this herb in a responsible and exploratory way for about 4.5 years. The best source of information on the subject in general would no doubt be Daniel Siebert's sagewisdom site. I will forgo a summary of his key points and opinions. I will only reiterate that Salvia is to be respected. It is not fun, relaxing or socially facilitating in any sense. Many who try it dislike it immediately, considering the effect to be uncontrolled, frightening or just plain confusing. Others claim to be somewhat immune to the effect. Yet others find it to be a great aid in personal exploration and the generation of creative ideas. Still others, like myself use it to explore the bounds of human consciouness itself. Interestingly, this seems to be evidence that she chooses you and not the other way around. What does the experience "mean"? Frankly I am still forming my own opinions. I am not convinced that it's possible to draw a firm conclusion in that regard. If it is possible, it would probably take a lifetime. It truely is a complex experience.

I have been lucid dreaming regularly for a little over 4 years. I put a fairly significant amount of time and energy into reading on the subject of lucidity as well as a number of related areas. I am also quite knowledgable about lucid dream supplement theory and use it to great advantage. These efforts and focus are rewarded with maybe 20-30 lucid dreams per month. Some wonderful and others mundane. But at the core of this effort is my use of Salvia. It was responsible for motivating me to get back into lucid dreaming and it continues to play a role in my success. I am sure of it. It's actually fairly shocking to me that little work has been done linking salvia to lucid dreaming. After all, a full blown salvia vision can be quite similar to a lucid dream, or perhaps more precisely an out of body experience.

But how does Salvia support lucid dreaming? There are three main aspects to consider. Two facilitate awareness training. The other is a broad, rather heuristic claim I will make.

WILD Practice:

The first thing which should be striking about salvia is the nature of the transition from a wakeful state to a visionary one. In lucid dreaming, we are all familiar with the concept of a wake initiated lucid dream, or WILD. Frankly speaking, WILDs are tough to pull off. I can induce WILDs, but they almost always require a bias in my acetylcholine levels (e.g. by taking a mix of galantamine and choline). Even then, most of my WILDs would be characterized as OOBE's, with a vibrationary state followed by an entrance to my dreamspace in which it's a replica of the real life scene I just left (e.g. my bedroom). But of course there is the case of WILDing based on hynagogic imagery (HI). As many have experienced, the twilight state between awake and asleep is often preceeded by hynagogic flashes and even auditory hallucinations. It's quite natural, normal and does not require psycho actives to induce. One only needs to pay attention to their closed eyes field of vision when drifting off and perhaps try to stay alert during the process. But there in lies the key. Staying alert. Maintaining a balance between consciously aware and drifting into formal sleep. This should ring a bell so to speak with the process of drifting into salvia space. Now I refer more to the process of consuming 1-3 hits of a high potency standardized extract. My personal choice would be a 20X extract standardized to 72 micro-grams of salvinorin A per gram of leaf material. Large hits should be consumed as thoroughly and as fast as possible due to the short half life associated with this method of consumption. Have you used salvia and smoked it in this manner? Did you go from 0 - 60 in about 3 seconds? Hard to maintain control and focus right? A little hard to relax and just let your subconscious drive? Well isn't that process and those attributes much like a WILD transition based on HI? Now let's go back to WILDing. Even getting to the hynagogic state and transitioning to REM generally requires that one engage in this exercise later in their sleep cycle. Hopefully, the reader is aware that WILDs are almost impossible early in the evening due to the propensity to move between stage 1-4 sleep with little REM (stage 5) in between. So practicing WILDs becomes difficult. It's hard to get to the hypnogogic state and such practice is best done in the middle of the night. But practicing awareness, relaxation and subtle control of the salvia ramp up is possible on demand. I maintain that learning to control that ramp up, helps one negotiate the WILD transition. In fact, it probably helps with both HI based and vibration based WILDs. If this idea intrigues you, start experimenting. Try to master the wakeful/alert to salvia space transition. Leverage this mastery to improve upon your management of WILD transitions.

Control and Recall in a Non-Wakeful State:

Think about the dream state. It's driven by our subconscious. It's unpredictable. It is hard to control or apply logic in. It can be very hard to remember dreams upon waking, even though we were quite in the moment while still in the dream. Do these attributes sound familiar? Can we make the same claims about the salvia induced visionary state?

Much like salvia can be used to master WILD transitions, I maintain that it can also be used to create a greater intimacy and level of control with the dream world. It allows you to experiment with different visionary levels. First, practice using a small enough dose such that you get visuals, but also maintain full awareness and keen recall once you leave the vision state. Once that dose is mastered, step it up a notch. A larger dose and additional practice in maintaining awareness, mental clarity and recall once the experience ends. At some point, you will hit a dose where you begin to lose these abilities. From my experience, the first to go is full recall of the experience. It's essentially an amnesiac state. But over time, you should be able to better negotiate control, awareness and recall. You should be able to maintain these attributes for larger and larger doses. This practice should positively impact your ability to apply focus, logic and recall of the dream state.

This suggestion is not completely disimilar to the practices of Tibetan Dream Yoga. In dream yoga, the goal is to master lucidity, destroy negative karmic threads and improve ones overall mental accuity and condition during dreaming. It is believed this focus and ability can be carried with you upon death. At death, the mental training one has undertaken is expected to help them maintain focus, and in principle provides the ability to influence their reincarnation. They are not caught up in the fantasies associated with the bardo's of death. Rather, their mental training spills into this state. A similar though somewhat more mundane analogy would be the use of reality checks. Doing reality checks repetitively during the day improves awareness while awake, which hopefully creates the habit of awareness while dreaming. Same fundamental concept.

Mastering control, focus and recall in the salvia induced visionary state, should spill into other mental states, including the dream state. Again, practice with an open mind and sense of purpose.

Poking Holes in the Wall:

Well, figuratively speaking anyway. Why don't we lucid dream as part of our standard operating procedure? Why can't we pick up on PSI information with greater reliability? What are the b

arriers involved? Evolution I suppose? I can make arguements as to why neither is particularly productive toward the survival of the species in general. But what about the small p

ercentage of us interested in exploring the bounds of this reality?

However one chooses to conceptualize things, there appear to be certain barriers or walls in place that only facilitate certain states and information transfer in general. Let's model the problem as such. Let's form a mental picture. A first wall-A divides the conscious and subconscious minds. A second wall-B divides the subconscious and supermind. Info at the supermind level needs to travers two walls to get to the conscious mind. Here, I use the term supermind in the spirit of Robert Monroe. It is the impermanent portion of your mind. It transcends death. It likely has access to all psychic (M-band) information. It is represented by the dreamspace itself.

From a life experience perspective, it seems to me that wall-A and wall-B are filters. They let in some info, but not all. Information bubbling up from your supermind would have to cross two full layers to get to the conscious mind, in the form of a visual imagine, stray thought, gut feeling etc ...

I maintain that the use of salvia chips away at both of these walls. It creates a temporary merging of all three aspects of your mind. For that matter, lucid dreams yield the same effect, a merging of the different components of your mind. I would conjecture that using salvia weakens these walls, and has an effect on both the conscious reception of PSI information, as well as the cooperation of the conscious, subconscious and superminds. It helps to create a closer relation between these processes and in doing so facilitates lucidity. Lucidity itself, strengthens ones ability become lucid in future dreams and if one challenges themselves, becomes a stepping stone for deeper exploration. These pursuits compliment one another, and stengthen the overall experience. It forces us to deepen our interpretation of the salvia experience. It becomes one big counter dependent loop. One which strenghtens and becomes more complex and deepens over time.

Summary:

So in summary, we've discussed three possible ways in which to use salvia to enhance lucid dreaming. But like all lucid dream facilitators or induction methods, people will have varying degrees of success experimenting with the methods herein. As with any method, give it a fair effort and period of time before you draw conclusions, positive or negative. If you choose to explore the use of salvia in this manner, please be responsible. This wonderful herb has received enough bad publicity and is poorly understood at best. But for those willing to take the time to work with it and explore its use in an intelligent manner, the rewards can be quite substantial. Only you will know when you get there.

dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-69049349258441724122010-12-08T07:44:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:13.699-08:00Myzeo Data CollectionWe have added another area to our experiments section of the site. In his article he talks about how lucid dreaming techniques have helped some individuals overcome nightmares in that they are able to control the dreams and aim the dreams into a less scary theme. I believe Hobson's conclusion says it best:

Although only little published research has been dedicated to the investigation of Lucid Dreaming Treatment, this research has presented preliminary and promising results, suggesting that LDT is effective in reducing nightmares. The reduction of nightmare frequency may consequently lead to better life quality during wakefulness. Earlier studies show that nightmares are not only a significant component of PTSD symptoms but that they also can develop into a disorder of their own. This further underscores the need to find effective treatments for chronic nightmares. LDT shows promising potential for the reduction of nightmare frequency, but its effectiveness is in need of substantial future exploration and validation before LDT might become more widely applied in the appropriate patient populations. In future studies, the effectiveness of LDT should be compared to other cognitive-restructuring techniques: larger sample sizes should be used and the intensity and length of the lucidity intervention should be substantially increased.

You can read the full article heredream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-83224468904900360082010-12-01T13:50:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:13.619-08:005-HTP BookI have been getting ready for my soon experiment with 5-HTP and reading up on some new references for the use of 5-HTP. I found a book in the library which really is a very informative book in the uses of 5-HTP called "5-HTP: Boost Your Serotonin Levels The Natural Way to Overcome Depression, Obesity, and Insomnia". Though the name of the book is incredibly long the information in the book seems to be very helpful for those who are dealing with those disorders mentioned in the title. Though the information seems to be a little bit out dated or incorrect, as Dr. Murray mentions using a MAO-I such as St John's wort in conjunction with over 100 mg of 5-HTP (something that may be safe for some people but still shouldn't be conducted), his book still is a good introduction into the positive uses of 5-HTP. I am a long believer in the anti-depressant uses of supplements (mainly 5-HTP) rather than the prescription based anti-depressants due to their effectiveness and low side effects.

Now many of us have heard and tried L-tryptophan to help with our sleep. Well Murray advises to not use L-tryptophan because in its process of convertion into serotonin, it turns into Kynurenine as well as 5-HTP. Kynurenine can cause muscle damage if built up to high.

In chapter 4 of the book Murray talks about how 5-HTP can help reduce insomnia and other sleep disorders. He talks about the science behind how serotonin is important in the sleep cycle and why many of these sleep disorders are caused by the lacking of a neurotransmitter often enough serotonin.

Though most of the information in the book I already knew, the book was still a good review of 5-HTP. Over all if you would like to learn about 5-HTP and its positive uses then this book is a great read.dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-90546752744326570932010-12-01T13:08:00.000-08:002011-01-28T14:56:13.580-08:00Kava MAO-BI have been reading an interesting book "Hallucinogens: A Forensic Drug Handbook" and scanned over something that may be beneficial to some readers. Apparently kava or Kava kava contains MAO-B and MAO-A in its lactones. The book says that the MAO-A's are the reason for Kava's anti depressant effects, but from what R posted about the MAO-B's a few posts ago, it seems that both MAO-A's, and B's are responsible for different antidepressant effects. As MAO-B effects the dopamine system and depression has recently been identified as dealing with more of a lack of dopamine in the brain and that the increasing of serotonin through a long list of events actually increase dopamine, then I tend to believe that the MAO-B in Kava are the more responsible. At any rate, Kava is a available anti-depressant and possibly lowering the amount of vivid dreams you have. Its all questionable because kava also has MAO-A's which tend to lower the amount of dopamine in the system and giving the dreamer more vivid dreams.

read more about Kava here: http://lucidconsciousness.com/psychotropia/?s=kavadream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-77391063301075765982010-11-30T08:37:00.001-08:002011-01-28T14:56:13.539-08:00Review: DMT: The Spirit MoleculeI received my kick-starter movie in the mail yesterday and decided to check it out. As promised I wanted to write a review about the movie so that some people could at least get a good idea of what to expect when they see the movie.

DMT: The Spirit Molecule is a documentary that talks about the history of DMT use in relation to Dr.Strassman's work. If you have ever read the book "DMT: The Spirit Molecule" and maybe a book on the history of drug use in America, well then you know just about everything that is in the movie. The director uses some great interviews to express their experiences as well as talking about the history of why DMT and other drugs like LSD were banned from research. The video goes into detail about the chemical relationship between DMT and other types of drugs, and how those drugs are being used today in clinical studies. There is a little video about the tribal use of DMT but really this is only a fraction of the movie.

The one thing that I was really surprised about in the movie was the idea that DMT is produced in the pineal gland. For anyone who has done any type of research about DMT, it is not a proven fact that its created in the pineal gland. Even Strassman states this in one of his interviews I conducted over a year ago:

I regret not being more clear about the hypothetical nature of the DMT-pineal link. There is one paper in which human pineal tissue is ground up and put into a test tube; then the precursors for 5-methoxy-DMT are added, stirred, and warmed, and out comes 5-methoxy-DMT. We have no data on intact, in-person pineal gland DMT synthesis. That’s one of the questions we hope to answer with our new assay at LSU. While the pineal link remains speculative, it is established that lung makes lots of DMT.

I am pretty sure that this assay that Strassman is talking about hasn't yet been concluded. In any way, its a bit hard to see Strassman talking about the pineal gland being where DMT is produced when its only theory, and once again pushing people to believe wrongly what he stated as being a problem in his book. Another thing that I had a problem with is that in the video they talked about how western society seems to be always trying to get the best high, the most bang for their buck kind of deal, but little in the movie do they show anything about the cultures that use DMT for healing such as in South America. They instead talk to westerners about their experiences on DMT and little dealing with Ayahuasca where the real healing is done. Jace Callaways research that dealt with the healing powers of DMT and increasing serotonin receptor sites, was done with Ayahuasca, not just DMT alone, and often enough with no mimosa hostilis which contains the large amount of DMT used in Ayahuasca. The Santo Daime also use Ayahuasca in their religious practices and not pure DMT. In truth, in terms of experiences with DMT, the movie focuses on the trippy experiences that DMT provides rather than the real healing after effects that it has. The video fails to address the long term effects that have dramatically changed these peoples lives for the good and bad after their experiences.

Over all the movie was great for a public who knows nothing about DMT or why anyone would want to use it. It tells us a realistic story about why DMT was banned from public use and research as well as the uses for DMT and other hallucinogens. It provides awareness to people about the experiences behind DMT and about Strassmans book and his research. The video seems to fail in a number of areas which I believe would be very beneficial to people who wanted to know how DMT can help them and others who have mental illness. I would highly recommend everyone to purchase the movie because it supports further research as well as public awareness, but to really understand the pros and cons of using DMT, more personal research into the area of the drug is needed for those individuals.dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-55220530844691288982010-11-30T08:37:00.000-08:002010-11-30T17:44:44.691-08:00Review: DMT: The Spirit MoleculeI received my kick-starter movie in the mail yesterday and decided to check it out. I wake up in terrible pain and I remember my dreams very vividly. I never really paid much attention to this besides taking a aspirin and trying to go back to sleep. Apparently there are some really positive uses for such a withdrawal.

Caffeine Withdrawal Induced Lucid Dreaming (CWILD) is where a person goes to sleep full knowing they will have a headache from the caffeine withdrawal, wake up after a period of time, and take a type of caffeinated substance, and fall back to sleep. The sleeping person subconsciously feels the effects of the withdrawal go away and the person is then in a lucid state. The caffeine acts as a type of indicator that the person is asleep.

About a year ago R left us a post on the site about a article that he read about dealing with caffeine and how it may increase melatonin production. He said that after his review of the article that it looked like caffeine when induced in small amounts can allow for slower breakdown of the melatonin in the brain. Here we can get the information strait from the article itself:

In summary, caffeine was found to increase the oral bioavailability of melatonin probably due to an inhibition of the CYP1A2 catalysed first-pass metabolism of melatonin. The effect was more pronounced in nonsmokers and subjects with the *1F/*1F genotype.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1884289/

I also found another article that gives us a little more information into how the whole caffeine process may be helping the melatonin production:

Treatment of cultured rat pineal glands with norepinephrine or dibutyryl adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate causes a six- to tenfold stimulation of N-acetyltransferase. This enzyme converts serotonin to N-acetylserotonin, the immediate precursor of melatonin. The increased synthesis of melatonin caused by norepinephrine treatment appears to be the result of stimulation of N-acetyltransferase by an adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate mechanism.

http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1970Sci...168..979K

Caffeine increases the amount of adenosine in the body, and from what the article says is that adenosine has a increase in the conversion of serotonin into melatonin. It truly is a wonder how coffee keeps anyone awake :)

So in the case of CWILD not only is the caffeine acting as a indicator of being in REM or dreaming, but also allowing for the better use of melatonin. From the article this use of caffeine would be better used in non-smokers as well as people with a specific genotype. It may be interesting to also look into the sleeping habits of smokers, as they may sleep less due to the breaking down of melatonin in their bodies.

Over all CWILD is becoming a very effective way of increasing the amount of lucid dreams a person can have. Moonbeam and Pj over at mortalmist.com are the ones who working hard on the project and indicate that their use of this technique has increased their lucid dreams to be about 80% effective.

Take part of this discussion over at: mortalmist.com

R's original article: http://lucidconsciousness.com/?p=29dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-39376705196902437362010-11-29T07:37:00.000-08:002010-11-30T17:31:17.602-08:00Caffeine Withdrawal Induced LDSomething that I have always noticed during my days of sleeping is the times when I have a horrible caffeine withdrawal headache.

R's original article: http://lucidconsciousness.com/?p=29dream dwellershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11258179906613624448noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-536455483197919928.post-69669600705548487452010-11-28T10:54:00.001-08:002011-01-28T14:56:13.465-08:00Mitch Schultz - DMT: The Spirit Molecule InterviewMartain Ball over at the Entheogenic Evolution provides us another great interview, this time by Mitch Schultz the producer and director of DMT: The Spirit Molecule.
